Has EA Learned Its Lesson With Need For Speed?

Need For Speed was at one time the prominent racing franchise. It mixed high speeds, fast action, and live-action cutscenes to give the story a more personal touch. Yet, like many franchises, the series devolved into cheap gimmicks, and even a bad movie.

Yet, EA is not giving up on the franchise, in fact, a new game was just announced to be coming in Fiscal Year 2018. Which is this upcoming April until next March. While usually this would mean another quick game to try and make cash, fans can find encouragement in this announcement. Why? Well, the last Need For Speed came out early last year, and for all we know, the game won’t come out until near the middle of 2018. Which means, there could be over a year, or two, going into this title. Furthermore, EA stated during an earning call that they’re trying to push the game from where it was before, to where it needs to be to be great:

“We’ve given this game an extended development cycle to focus on innovation, and the Need for Speed team is pushing the boundaries of action driving with what we believe is the most exciting and best-looking Need for Speed game we’ve ever produced,”

The key words here is “extended development cycle” and “focus on innovation”. This proves they’ve honestly learned their listen, and want to deliver not just another title, but something special, something that will make fans not only want it, but to play it endlessly.

Sadly, not all companies are will to take this approach, to give games the time and effort they deserve. But, it appears that EA is one of the exceptions, at least in this case. Whether it was the bad reviews from fans and critics, or that they feel that Need For Speed can truly be something again, it’s nice to know they’are at least trying to make it special.
